IDEO: Revolutionizing Design – A Look Into Their Impact and Innovations

What is IDEO? And What Did They do for Design?

What’s the deal with IDEO? You hear it come up so often but have you ever stopped to wonder what’s so special about it? Well allow me to tell you. In today’s fast-paced world innovation is the key to success. IDEO is a world renowned design and innovation firm. They’ve been at the forefront of transforming industries and shaping the way we approach problem solving. IDEO has become a global leader in the field by using a Human Centered Design approach and multidisciplinary problem solving.

The Origin of IDEO

The Beginning

IDEO’s fascinating journey began in Palo Alto, California, in 1991, with the collaborative efforts of David Kelley, Bill Moggridge, and Mike Nuttall. This visionary design firm was forged through the merger of several notable entities, including David Kelley Design, Moggridge and Associates, ID Two, and Matrix Product Design.

David Kelley, who had previously founded David Kelley Design in 1978, played a pivotal role in shaping IDEO’s philosophy with his unwavering belief in the power of Human-Centered design. His emphasis on placing people at the heart of the design process laid a solid foundation for IDEO’s approach.

Bill Moggridge, an accomplished designer and entrepreneur, brought his expertise in product design and interaction to IDEO. Having established his own design consulting firms, Moggridge Associates and ID Two, he had already made significant contributions to the field. Notably, his involvement in groundbreaking projects like the Grid Compass, one of the earliest laptop computers, showcased his forward-thinking mindset and design prowess. Within IDEO, Moggridge played a vital role in shaping the firm’s design process and methodology.

The Evolution

In 1996, Steelcase, a renowned office furniture manufacturer, acquired a majority stake in IDEO. However, as IDEO’s focus evolved beyond product design, the firm started to explore organizational design and management consulting. This shift in direction prompted IDEO to initiate a buyback program in 2007, ultimately regaining control of its shared ownership.

Throughout its history, IDEO has continuously evolved and expanded its areas of expertise, leaving an indelible mark on the design industry. From its origins as a product design firm to its current multidisciplinary approach encompassing organizational design and social impact, IDEO remains a trailblazer, consistently pushing the boundaries of design thinking and making a meaningful difference in the world.

My first encounter with IDEO took place during a high school engineering class, where we were introduced to their extraordinary work through an episode of ABC’s captivating show, The Deep Dive. In this particular episode, IDEO was tasked with redesigning the shopping cart within a mere five days, providing a glimpse into their remarkable design process. The experience left me awe-inspired, and if you’re intrigued, I highly recommend watching the video linked below.

IDEO has emerged as an incredibly innovative and influential design firm, continually pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. I find myself frequently bringing up IDEO in conversations because their contributions to the world of design are truly remarkable. They stand as pioneers of Design Thinking and champions of Human-Centered Design, concepts that have revolutionized the industry and brought about meaningful change.

Their Human Centered Design Philosophy and Design Thinking Process

Innovation Through Collaboration

IDEO firmly believes in the value of collaboration, recognizing the significance of bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds. Their commitment to fostering an inclusive design culture creates an environment where assumptions are challenged, knowledge is shared, and seamless collaboration thrives. By embracing diversity, IDEO ensures that a wide range of perspectives and approaches are considered when tackling a problem, ultimately leading to the iteration and refinement of the very best solution. By harnessing the collective power of diverse minds, IDEO ensures that the design process is enriched with fresh insights and innovative ideas.

Notable Projects

Let’s take a look at some of the projects IDEO has played a part in…

  1. Apple’s First Mouse:
    • In the late 1970’s, Apple collaborated with IDEO to create the very first Apple mouse. This mouse revolutionized the way human’s interacted with computers. This mouse used optical tracking, unlike most mouses which used mechanical ball based tracking, and integrated a seamless surface with hidden buttons which gave it a sleek and minimalist look. This look influenced future Apple designs and became part of Apple’s signature design language, influencing iterations of their mouse and other products.
  2. Ford’s SYNC System:
    • IDEO partnered with Ford to develop the user interface for their SYNC in-car communication and entertainment system. This collaboration allowed drivers to control different functions with their voice. This is very common now, but back then it was a big deal.
  3. Stanford d.school:
    • IDEO played a large role in establishing the Stanford d.school, also known as the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design. In the late 1990’s, David Kelley along with a team of educators and other industry professionals, recognized the need for a design focused institute that upheld the same ideals as IDEO. This led to the creation of the school, where David Kelley served as one of the co-founders.

What is IDEO Doing Now?

IDEO is currently focused on designing responsibly, design for climation, transformation through design, and inclusive design.

IDEO U: Empowering Creativity and Design Thinking

In order to make their programs and expertise accessible, IDEO created IDEO U, an online learning platform to help individuals and organizations master their Human-Centered Design approaches. This program provides access to a variety of cohort and self paced courses covering topics such as storytelling, innovation, and design leadership. Their courses are suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners alike.

In a world where innovation is the key to success, IDEO continues to lead the way, transforming industries, inspiring creativity, and making a lasting impact through their unique approach to design.
